After renovating their own home, many readers will ask, "How long will it take to move in after the renovation is completed?" However, if you ask after the renovation is completed, it is actually too late, because after the renovation is completed, the standard has already exceeded the standard. Whether you measure or not, the result will be There.
This article will briefly talk about four questions:
(1) What is considered excessive?
(2) How to measure more accurately?
(3) How can we avoid exceeding the standard?
(4) What to do if it exceeds the standard?
01
How to calculate formaldehyde exceeding the standard
I graduated from university with a major in pharmacy. The founder of toxicology, Paracelsus, wrote a Latin sentence: Dosis facit venenum, which translated into modern Internet language is: "To talk about toxicity without dosage is to be a hooligan." 』.
Indoor air pollution during decoration is mainly formaldehyde and TVOC. Let’s take formaldehyde as an example.
There is no need to talk about the discoloration of "formaldehyde". Formaldehyde is found in nature and is harmful to the human body only when it exceeds a certain dose.
The current common reference is the GB/T18883-2002 "Indoor Air Quality Standard" promulgated by the Ministry of Health of my country. According to this standard, the room is closed for 12 hours and tested, and the formaldehyde does not exceed 0.1mg/m3 to meet the standard.
Testing methods, ranging from formaldehyde test paper, handheld electrochemical formaldehyde tester, formaldehyde spectrometer to CMA certified professional testing institutions, are increasingly reliable.
Formaldehyde test strips and electrochemical formaldehyde testers basically have relatively large errors. Some machines online for tens of dollars or one or two hundred dollars are basically scams. Don't buy them. If you buy them, you will pay IQ tax.
If you want to be more accurate, we recommend two methods. Method 1: Rent a Japanese Riken handheld detector online, which costs 10,000 yuan. The rental fee is basically 200 per day, and the consumables are 40 per time (if you test a room once, it depends on how many locations you want to test). Another option is to find a testing agency, one that is professional and can issue testing reports. Look for the national CMA certification and the international CNAS certification. Generally, each testing point charges a few hundred yuan.

How to prevent exceeding the standard?
Prevention is much more important than cure.
Preventing air pollution is like preventing fires. If you try to control the fire after it occurs, you will suffer some losses. This is also the case when formaldehyde exceeds the standard. It is most important to take precautions during early decoration.
Where does formaldehyde come from? Why is it said that it will be released for 10 years? FirstThe source of aldehyde is phenolic resin or urea-formaldehyde resin, mainly the urea-formaldehyde glue used in our panel furniture or artificial panels. It will slowly decompose into free formaldehyde at room temperature.
I would like to add here that not all artificial boards have formaldehyde problems. Some artificial boards are produced with MDI glue, which does not involve the problem of excessive formaldehyde. However, businesses will also use this concept to sell them more expensively. Moreover, some board manufacturers produce bare boards that meet the standards, and the processors add a layer of decorative panels to exceed the standards...
Try to buy materials with high environmental protection levels during the decoration process, especially the various glues, artificial boards, composite floors, paints, panel furniture, etc. used in the decoration process. Try to choose boards with an environmental protection grade of E1 or even E0.
Some people have been wondering whether there is E0 in the national standard. Even if it is an enterprise standard, the higher the environmental protection, the better. Of course, we are afraid of companies cheating, so it is more reliable to choose panels from large manufacturers, because the cost of fraud is high and they will not just do it casually.
The recently launched recommended national standard GB/T39600-2021 "Classification of Formaldehyde Emission of Artificial Panels and Their Products" recommends E0 grade (≤0.050mg/m³) and ENF grade (≤0.025mg/m³) boards. .

How to control excessive standards?
Although many people know the importance of prevention, the actual situation is still likely to exceed the standard. On the one hand, artificial boards are indispensable in decoration. It is not necessary to use all solid wood or metal. Regardless of whether you have enough money, the physical stability of most solid wood is actually not as good as that of artificial boards. On the other hand, even if each material meets the standard, there is still a cumulative effect, that is, a large number of cabinets are made in a room, and a large amount of artificial boards are used, which may still cause the interior to exceed the standard.
The reason why I am generally not optimistic about various formaldehyde treatments is because the release of formaldehyde from artificial panels is a long-term process. Treatment can only deal with free formaldehyde. The rest is still inside the board, and it is still in the state of urea-formaldehyde resin. What do you think? deal with? We can only wait for it to be released before dealing with it.
Of course, for materials that meet the standards themselves, after being processed several times in the early stage, the speed and amount of later release should be greatly slowed down, so it can also be considered useful.
In addition, high temperature and high humidity environments are helpful for the release of formaldehyde, especially high temperatures, so some people on the Internet have said that it will be safer to stay in a hotel during the summer. This statement makes sense.
In my opinion, in addition to fundamentally reducing the introduction of pollution sources,Opening windows for ventilation is the most effective and cost-effective. Other physical adsorption effects are very limited, chemical decomposition conditions are harsh and only free formaldehyde is treated. Green plants and folk remedies can only be used for psychological comfort and are basically ignored.
Formaldehyde is released from the board into the room. The indoor formaldehyde concentration is high. When you open the window for ventilation, it is equivalent to a drop of ink diluted into the river, and the concentration is safe.
In order to speed up the air flow, some people use exhaust fans and electric fans indoors to increase the air flow when there is no wind to dilute the formaldehyde concentration in the indoor air.
Of course, the outdoor air quality in some areas may not be suitable for opening windows for ventilation. In this case, fresh air fans and air purifiers can be considered.

How many months does it take to ventilate?
I usually say 2 months, which is just an approximate time. I don’t know if the materials you use are reliable. Of course, in theory, the longer the ventilation time, the less formaldehyde will be. I have a friend who installed a luxury house and has not lived in it for 2 years. Can we compare? In addition, for people like me, who have been dragging and installing for more than a year and still haven't moved in, most people can't learn this. I comfort myself by saying that it's time to ventilate the house.
In addition, from a general point of view, the longer the drying time is not, the better, because many wood products, especially solid wood products, such as solid wood floors and solid wood furniture are relatively sensitive to temperature and humidity. Houses that are occupied by people are more stable, so if they are not occupied for a long time, these solid wood products are more likely to crack. Moreover, if no one lives there for a long time, it will be inconvenient to open and close the windows of the new house.

Summarize my opinion
(1) Light decoration, hard decoration can be as simple as possible. The more complex the wall shape and ceiling shape is, the more potential pollution such as materials and glue will be introduced, and the budget will be higher.
(2) When it comes to wood products, it is best to use high-end solid wood, or replace it with metal materials. If you use artificial panels, choose the best within your economic capabilities. Products from large manufacturers are relatively more reliable.
(3) Fresh air system can be considered. (Opening windows can assist ventilation to a certain extent. There are always some weather conditions that are not suitable for opening windows, but to be honest, fresh air cannot completely replace opening windows in terms of formaldehyde removal)
(4) Before and after moving in, try to ventilate as much as possible if windows are suitable for ventilation. Can't ventilateUnder certain circumstances, fresh air systems and air purifiers can be used to assist, such as when you need to turn on the air conditioner in summer or winter after moving in.
(5) If you want to speed up the release and dilution, find ways to increase the indoor temperature (for example, after a summer, or turn on the air conditioner and floor heating), and speed up the flow of indoor and outdoor air (for example, through a range hood, Exhaust fans, industrial fans, centrifugal exhaust fans, etc.).
(6) Is it better to keep the window open or to close it for a period of time and then open it? Unless you can increase the indoor temperature and humidity and open and close the windows every 2-3 hours, it would be better to keep the windows open all the time.
In fact, after understanding the sources and rules of formaldehyde production and understanding the essential methods of formaldehyde treatment, specific methods can still be thought of, but some cost money, while ventilation does not cost money.
How long will it take for you to move in after decoration and ventilation?
